More than 4,400 Coloradans sent messages to members of the Colorado General Assembly during the 2008 legislative session through this web site.

Our concerns were clear: don’t mandate medical payments coverage on our car insurance and don’t take our state back to the flawed and expensive "no-fault" auto insurance system of the past.

The legislature responded to our messages, but only partially:

  • The legislature approved SB 11, which adds $5,000 in medical payments coverage to each car insurance policy. However, it provides all of us with a way to reject the added medical coverage if we already have adequate health insurance that covers us if we are injured in an auto accident. We will have to tell our insurer in writing whether we want the coverage or not. When SB 11 takes effect on Jan. 1, 2009, make an informed decision before you renew your car insurance and check the specifics of your health insurance, retirement benefits or military benefits.
  • In future years, Coloradans will have to remain vigilant for the special interests that may ask the legislature to raise the $5,000 requirement or make the coverage mandatory with no provision to reject it for all Coloradans who drive.

Coloradans for Sensible Solutions believes that consumers can make our own decisions as to whether we need additional medical coverage on our car insurance. In essence, SB 11 does require additional medical insurance be added to your auto insurance. The opt-out provision adds another level of complexity to your car insurance, but at least Coloradans do have the option of rejecting the coverage.

Check this website for more information about SB 11 and the opt-out provision as the Jan. 1, 2009, implementation date approaches.

And thanks for your time in telling the members of the Colorado legislature about your concerns. Remember to vote in Colorado's primary election in August, and in the general election in November. The folks we send to the legislature have a significant impact on our lives and fortunes. Make the best choice with your vote.
